Automaton

An automaton is a self-operating machine that follows a set of predetermined actions, like a mechanical robot that works on an assembly line performing one task repeatedly. Throughout history there have been travelers' accounts from ancient Greece, Byzantium, China and others that tell of wondrous machines that had been created to impress and awe visitors as well as to provide practical help (like automatic clocks and calendars).
