Trainable Mentally Retarded

The term "trainable mentally retarded"is used to refer to individuals who score between 3 and 5 standard deviations below normal. They can, with patience and time, learn basic reading, writing and math skills. When children have this level of intellectual deficit, it becomes quite obvious prior to school entrance. As they grow, teachers and others generally concentrate on learning practical life skills which can allow them to live with some level of independence and perhaps hold down some type of employment.
