Sclera

The sclera is better known as the "whites of the eye." It is the protective layer of the eye containing collagen and elastic fiber. In humans it is white and surrounds the iris (the colored part of the eye) unlike other species that have pigmented scleras. In humans, it is believed that the white sclera allows for the iris to be used as a part of nonverbal communication.
