Reciprocate

To reciprocate is to exchange equally. For instance, "The woman, after having been invited to dinner by a friend, reciprocated by inviting the friend over for dinner shortly thereafter." Reciprocity is a concept in social psychology - a social norm that encourages positive and prosocial actions by rewarding them with returned positive actions. This is a facet of the development of social relationships such as friendships and romantic partnerships.
