Pit Of Despair
American psychologist Harry Harlow created the pit of despair experiment with the help of his students. They aim to create an animal model of depression so that people may learn about and appreciate the condition. They are hoping to discover a possible solution to this condition. They used rhesus macaque monkeys and housed them in stainless steel constructions like vertical cones. Although there was a food box and water in the cell, the monkey was left alone for weeks without interaction. After the experiment, they discovered that most of the monkeys remained motionless in a huddled posture, clasping their bodies with their hands for the following weeks. The goal of this study is to know the emotional pain that a person with severe depression experiences. Through this, we might learn about and understand their sufferings.
