Peripheral

To be peripheral is to be on the edge or periphery of something. For instance, England is on the peripheral edge of Europe because it is located on the outer edge of the continent. In medical usage, peripheral is most often used to refer to the peripheral nervous system (PNS), (hyperlink?) the portion of the nervous system that branches off from the spinal cord and goes throughout the body.
