Nociception

Nociception refers to the ability to process and encode information relating to noxious (unpleasant, painful or dangerous) stimuli. The nociceptors (pain receptor cells) come in three types; cutaneous (skin), somatic (bones and joints) and visceral (body organs) and can process pain that is mechanical, chemical or thermal in nature and transmit the information to the brain.
