Mandate Phenomenon

Mandate phenomenon is a leader's tendency to go beyond their limits when they believe that the majority is supporting them. When an authority figure perceives that many people are on his side, there is less likelihood that he would be concerned about criticisms; hence, he may become bolder in expressing his dominance.

For instance, a club president would more confident in initiating a petition against a professor when his friends and classmates backed him up.
