Johann Frederich Herbart
Johann Frederich Herbart (1776-1841) is remembered as a philosopher, psychologist, and founder of modern concepts of pedagogy (the art and science of teaching). His interest in methods of teaching emanated from his experiences with tutoring while on temporary hiatus from his studies of philosophy and led to his opening a "Seminary of Pedagogy" for the training of teachers. He is remembered as premier among the generation of post-Kantian philosophers and for his contributions to the study of aesthetics.
