Generalization Gradient
The term generalization gradient is used to describe a graphic representation of the strength of two different stimuli, an original conditioned stimulus and a new stimulus with similar characteristics, in eliciting a similar response. The generalization gradient is based on the phenomenon of stimulus generalization that occurs when a new stimulus evokes responses similar to those elicited by an already conditioned stimulus due to both stimuli being alike. The similarity of the responses tends to increase the more the stimuli resemble each other. The difference between the responses is depicted in a generalization gradient, which shape reflects the degree of stimulus generalization between two or more stimuli. An inhibitory gradient represents a decreased tendency to respond to stimuli resembling the conditioned stimulus, while the excitatory gradient represents an increased tendency to do so.
