Francis Cecil Sumner
Francis Cecil Sumner (1895-1954) was a psychologist whose research focused on psychoanalysis, racial bias, and educational justice. He is known as the "Father of Black Psychology" as he was the first African-American to receive a PhD in the field of psychology. He taught and published over the course of a lengthy career even when faced with racial biases and lack of funding due to his ethnicity. He was one of the founders of the psychology department at Howard University which he chaired for many years.
