Coulrophobia

Coulrophobia is the fear of clowns. Clowns are often men dressed in a costume, with colorful makeup, wig and notably, a plastic round nose. Most clowns are intended to entertain and provide humor to children, but due to the costume and unusual look of the clown, it can often lead to a scary or negative experience.

Since childhood traumatic events often stay with a child as they grow up, it is unsurprising that a phobia of clowns can continue to be experienced into adulthood.
