Authenticity, in psychology and counseling, refers to the trait of being able to connect with a client with sincerity and empathy. This trait ,along with being able to connect with a client, makes treatment progress more smoothly. When the counselor is authentic, and actually empathizes with the client, this warmth and understanding can be felt and opens a more intimate level of communication between the therapist and the client than one without empathy and compassion.
