Astraphobia is the fear of thunder and lightning. Thunderstorms are a common weather event in many parts of the world and can cause some very real threats to everyday human existence.

Many people in the developed world take for granted the fact that we have sturdy shelters, such as houses and apartments, to keep us safe and dry from these weather events. Even then, serious thunderstorms can cause fright, damage and overall uncertainty about the immediate future.

It is an assault on the senses and for those who have been given a big fright by a clap of thunder, or a near miss with a lightning strike, may well exhibit emotions such as anxiety and nervousness on the lead up to a future storm. This can negatively affect work performance, study, sleep and focus with every loud rumble outside.
