Agitated depression is a severe mood disorder characterized by both symptoms of agitation and depression.

Restlessness, nervousness, motor agitation, irritability, and excitement are combined with symptoms of depression. Because this is a combination of both high arousal and depressive feelings there is an increased risk of self-injury and suicide. Sometimes the agitation can have physical manifestations such as fidgeting, pacing, or the wringing hands. Typically medications are used to control these symptoms along with therapy.
